‘Typical summer of the future’: third official nationwide heatwave on the way

A new heatwave is set to hit Belgium. From Sunday, temperatures will again reach 30° and are likely to remain above that threshold in the days that follow. VRT weather presenter Bram Verbruggen: “This is a perfect example of the sort of summer we’re likely to see more often in the coming years: dry and hot.”

“A cool interlude, with slightly ‘more normal’ temperatures” is how Verbruggen describes the past week. While temperatures barely dropped below 20°, the second nationwide heatwave of the year has now officially ended.

However, temperatures are set to rise again at the weekend. “Even in the coldest scenarios, we’re still looking at three days of 30° Celsius next week,” Verbruggen says. “Although temperatures may change slightly again in the next set of calculations.”

There have already been four heatwaves regionally, but only two at the Ukkel monitoring station. So this could officially be the third of the summer. Verbruggen: “It’s not a record, but it certainly looks as though this is set to be one of the hottest summers in years.”

Warm daytime temperatures mean it barely cools down at night. On Saturday night, temperatures will be between 18 and 20°, with night-time temperatures increasing in the coming week.

“Now is the time to cool down your interior walls, as a lot of heat builds up there,” Verbruggen advises. “So anyone who wants to cool down their bedroom would be best advised to leave their windows open over the coming nights.”

Even in the coldest scenarios, we’re still looking at three days of 30° Celsius next week

There is very little chance of rain in the next week. July was exceptionally dry, and August is continuing that trend.

“This is a perfect example of the sort of summer we’re going to see more often in the coming years: dry and hot,” says Verbruggen. “I’d almost dare to call it a typical summer of the future.”
