Low flow of the River Maas: “Use tap water sparingly”

The low flow of the River Maas (Meuse) has heightened concerns about drinking water supplies. The Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) has just issued its latest drinking water report.

A heightened state of vigilance applies in the areas where water companies Farys, water-link, De Watergroep Mid-West and AGSO Knokke-Heist get their supplies. These areas are heavily dependent on water from the same source.

There are currently no specific problems with regard to the supply of drinking water, nor are any specific restrictions on usage in operation. However, the Flemish environment agency, the VMM, and the water companies are asking people to use tap water sparingly.

The situation is being closely monitored in view of the imminent new heatwave. Higher temperatures could cause water consumption to rise once again. For the time being, however, the message remains that the drinking water supply is secure, but that wastage should be avoided.
