More staff join Aviapartner strike at Brussels Airport

A spontaneous strike by staff at ground handling company Aviapartner is continuing at Brussels Airport, with the evening shift joining the action that began early on Monday morning. The strike has caused disruption to check-in and boarding operations and delays to some flights.

“This spontaneous strike is about long-standing dissatisfaction regarding staff policy,” says Jorn Hanssens of the ACV Plus union. “People who have been working there for years and have built up experience and knowledge still earn the same as a starter. That dissatisfaction runs deep, because at rival companies, those people are recognised with a slightly higher pay scale.”

Meanwhile, the evening shift has joined the strike. “The baggage handlers may well join us,” says Hanssens. “They are in talks with management, as they too are dissatisfied. Depending on the outcome of those talks, it is quite possible that they will show solidarity by walking out as well, which means that planes will no longer be loaded or unloaded.”

It is not yet clear whether the strike will continue on Tuesday and what disruption there will be.
