A spontaneous strike by ground handling company Aviapartner has caused long queues at Brussels Airport.
Ground handler strike delays flights at Brussels Airport
The strike broke out between 3.30 and 4.00 on Monday morning, a spokesperson for the airport said, disrupting check-in and boarding operations and leading to delays for some flights. The impact is limited to flights handled by Aviapartner. Flights handled by Alyzia, the second ground handling company operating at the airport, are not affected.
“If you are travelling with only hand luggage, check-in online so you can go straight to security screening,” the airport said. “We regret the impact of this union action on our passengers.”
Aviapartner is a Belgian company that provides ground handling services at 72 airports in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and South Africa. It is not yet clear why staff are striking. Brussels Airport advises passengers to check its website or that of their flight operator for updates.
Earlier this month, unscheduled strike action by staff at air traffic control agency Skeyes brought air traffic to and from Belgium to a standstill.
