Luxury night bus with real beds to connect Zurich, Brussels and Amsterdam

From November, Swiss company Twiliner will start operating luxury night buses between Zurich and Amsterdam, via Brussels, and between Zurich and Barcelona. The buses are equipped with seats that can be fully reclined into flat beds. Twiliner says it is targeting travellers who are looking for an alternative to flying.

“Night buses with beds are new in Europe,” says Luca Bortolani, CEO of Twiliner. “You can find them in Asia and South America, but those buses don’t comply with European safety regulations. We have now developed a system that does comply with the regulations.”

Twiliner’s seats can be converted into a real bed. The double-decker buses will be able to carry 21 passengers: 18 on the upper deck and 3 on the lower deck. They have toilets, electric sockets, wifi and a space for passengers to change their clothes.

It’s not cheap, but we are offering a unique product

A single ticket from Brussels to Zurich will cost around 180 euros. “It’s not cheap, but we are offering a unique product,” says Bortolani. “The number of passengers is limited, but we need two drivers per route.”

He says his company is targeting travellers who are looking for an ecological alternative to flying or who are afraid of flying. “They could also choose the train,” he says. “But the train is also expensive and night trains are often overbooked.”

Twiliner will start with two routes: Zurich-Basel-Luxembourg-Brussels-Rotterdam-Amsterdam and Zurich-Girona-Barcelona. In the first few months, buses will run several times a week, depending on demand. The aim is to offer daily services from next year.

For the Zurich-Amsterdam route, Twiliner is using buses from the Limburg company Staf Cars.
