Will the new Flemish road tax be beneficial for you or are you better off sticking with the old scheme?

From today, everyone in Flanders can check for themselves whether the planned Flemish reform of road tax will work out more favourably or not. The Flemish Government is launching a website where you can work out the difference between the old and the new tax yourself. If the new scheme works out cheaper, you can indicate straight away that you wish to switch. Anyone who does not wish to switch need not do anything.

In 2027, the annual road tax (JVB) in Flanders will be reformed. For most vehicles, the Flemish government will use just two parameters: the car’s weight and its CO₂ emissions. “The lighter and cleaner your car, the less you pay,” is the message. For cars with a powerful engine (over 2400 cc), you’ll pay slightly more.

Anyone who wants to check for themselves whether the new road tax will be cheaper can do so from today via the website www.vlaanderen.be/vergelijker , but it will be handy to have somebody who reads Dutch on hand. The Comparison Tool makes the reform very clear.

How does it work?

To make a comparison, all you need is your number plate and your registration date. Simply enter these details into the new Comparison Tool and you’ll immediately see a comparison between your current road tax and the new rate.

If the new rate is cheaper, you can switch to the new system straight away. If the current rate is cheaper – which may be the case, for example, for cars with a powerful engine or older cars – then you don’t need to do anything, and you’ll remain on the current rate until you buy your next car.
