Prime Minister De Wever insists on ‘debt brake’ if multi-year budget accord fails to materialise

Daily De Morgen was first to report the news that has meanwhile been confirmed to VRT NEWS. Such a mechanism would allow government spending to be frozen in emergencies, to prevent the country from running into financial difficulties.
The PM’s party remains determined to finalise the 2027 budget in good time. Meanwhile, negotiations on the multi-year budget up to 2029 are continuing. And if that is not finalised in time, De Wever hopes to have that debt brake at his disposal and to activate it via parliament. “This is by no means a substitute for the negotiations on the multi-year budget,” the party says.
A decision is expected to be taken in coming days.
