‘A true Brussels kid with over 15 years’ experience’: colleagues pay tribute to Officer Nordine (41) (VIDEO)

The Brussels police force is in mourning after an officer was shot dead on Monday night during an operation. Nordine, aged 41, was a highly experienced and much-respected colleague. ‘A true Brussels kid’, is how the Chief Constable describes him.

Nordine had been part of the force for over 15 years. In 2009, he joined the Brussels police as an inspector. For 10 years, he worked on the front line in the city centre.

In 2019, he joined the Anti-Robbery Brigade (AOB), a specialist unit deployed for high-risk operations. “In doing so, he realised his dream,” says Chief of Police Michel Goovaerts. “He did so with great conviction and professionalism.”

Within the force, Nordine was known as an experienced and valued colleague. Goovaerts describes him as “a true Brussels kid”, from a large family and with strong ties to the city.

He is praised for his motivation and dedication. “It was truly a calling for him.”

The inspector was killed on Monday night during a police operation following a violent carjacking. The stolen car was traced to Jette (Brussels). Officers from the Anti-Robbery Squad were dispatched to the scene.

Nordine then went to reconnoitre the location in plain clothes, as is customary in such operations. Shortly afterwards, colleagues found him shot. He had been hit by a bullet to the head and died shortly afterwards.

Several suspects have been arrested, but further details are not yet known. The investigation is in full swing.

Memorial service on Friday

His death has left a deep mark on the Brussels police force. “When even highly trained and well-equipped officers fall victim to incidents of this kind, it really hits home,” says Goovaerts.

The Chief Constable was in contact with the officer’s parents on Monday night. Messages of support are pouring in from across the country, he says. The Brussels police are planning a memorial service for the deceased inspector on Friday. It is due to take place in the Jubel Park.

“What I can guarantee is that we will keep the memory of Nordine alive,” says Goovaerts.

Colleagues pay their respects

Colleagues of the dead policeman gathered on the Poelaertplein in the City of Brussels last night.  As a mark of respect they turned on the blue lights of their vehices.
