The website and app of supermarket chain Albert Heijn in Belgium and the Netherlands are unavailable due to what is described as an “IT incident”, the company reports. Its logistics systems are also down, meaning the chain can no longer deliver groceries ordered online. Rival Delhaize is also affected.
Supermarket chains Albert Heijn and Delhaize hit by IT woes
The problem began on Sunday afternoon. “We took immediate measures to protect our IT environment. Part of this involves the preventative temporary shutdown of a number of systems,” said Albert Heijn.
Customer service and logistics systems have also been temporarily shut down, meaning that groceries ordered online cannot be delivered.
The shops remain open, but last week’s promotional prices are still visible on the electronic labels in the racks. “These are the prices for last week’s promotions, a lower price may therefore be shown on labels in the racks and a higher price at the check-out.”
It is not clear whether any customer data has been leaked. “We are investigating the incident and working to restore our services. Protecting the data of our customers, staff and partners is our top priority,” the company said in a statement.
Impact on Delhaize
Delhaize has also taken immediate steps to protect its IT systems. “All our shops in Belgium and Luxembourg remain open and customers can continue to do their shopping as normal,” Delhaize assures us. The company is doing everything it can to get the systems up and running again as quickly as possible.
For the time being, customers cannot place orders for this week. Due to the IT incident, customer services are temporarily unavailable, although the app and website remain accessible.
“Protecting the data of our customers, staff and partners is our absolute priority. We are currently unable to say when all our systems will be available again,” the company states.
