Drifting Ferrari F40 at Zoute Grand Prix: Police draw up charge sheets

During the Zoute Grand Prix in the jet set seaside resort of Knokke-Heist (West Flanders) police drew up charge sheets after the driver of a bright red Ferrari F40 was seen to be executing inappropriate driving. On the seafront and at the luxury resort La Réserve, the driver of the Ferrari began drifting and doing doughnuts. “Every car, whether it is taking part in the Zoute Grand Prix or not, must comply with the Highway Code” the police say. The organisers, too, were less than impressed by the ‘stunt driving’.

The first day of the Zoute Grand Prix kicked off with the Iconic Rally, a race for iconic cars built between 1975 and 2005. During the race, the driver of a bright red Ferrari F40 went drifting on several occasions and performed ‘donuts’ (see video). Drifting involves drivers intentionally making the rear tires lose traction or grip so the car slides sideways through a turn while they stay completely in control.

This happened at several places including outside the five-star hotel La Réserve, as well as on Dumortierlaan and at the finish line. Videos of the ‘stunt driving’ were eagerly shared on social media. However, neither the organisers nor the police were particularly impressed by the ‘stunt driving’.

Police investigating who was behind the wheel

“We’ve seen the footage,” says Chief Constable Steve Desmet. “A report is being drawn up against the driver of the car. The driver exhibited inappropriate driving behaviour and was also driving in the wrong direction. His manoeuvres on public roads are downright dangerous, especially as there were lots of people watching.”

The police are still trying to establish who the driver is. “The public prosecutor’s office will have to decide what happens with the police report,” says Desmet. “The Zoute Grand Prix is meant to be a celebration. This behaviour is completely unacceptable. The same rules apply to all other cars in our municipality over the coming days.”

The police also warn that every car, whether taking part in the Zoute Grand Prix or not, must comply with the Highway Code. “We’re responding swiftly and will take action where necessary,” says Desmet.
