Carles Puigdemont is best known as the former president of the autonomous Spanish region of Catalonia. He is a fervent advocate of Catalan independence and a key figure in the Catalan quest for self-determination.

Puigdemont has been living in exile for nine years now. Shortly after the 2017 independence referendum in Catalonia, the Catalan parliament’s declaration of independence and the national government’s dissolution of the Catalan government, he fled Spain.
