European investigation into former Belgian PM and former Euro MP Guy Verhofstadt

Belgium’s federal police are conducting an investigation, on behalf of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), into former Belgian Prime Minister and former Euro MP Guy Verhofstadt (Flemish liberal Anders). Weekly Knack broke the news that VRT News has been able to confirm. The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) is also involved in the investigation.

The investigation focuses, amongst other things, on the way in which Verhofstadt managed trainees in the European Parliament. The investigators are looking at the period during which Verhofstadt was chair of the former liberal group in the European Parliament (ALDE). He held that position from 2009 to 2019. Verhofstadt stepped down as a Member of the European Parliament in 2024.

“OLAF has merely requested information from our client regarding the supervision of a number of trainees in the European Parliament, in which he was not personally involved in his capacity as group chair,” Verhofstadt’s lawyers write in a written statement. “Verhofstadt has not yet been interviewed, and there are currently no specific allegations against him. He is cooperating fully.”

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office has declined to comment on the case.
