On Saturday, another Palestinian hunger striker was taken from the Church of St John the Baptist at the Beguinage in central Brussels to hospital. A spokeswoman for the hunger strikers reported the news to the Belga news agency.
Another Palestinian hunger striker in Brussels taken to hospital
The Palestinian man admitted to hospital on Saturday is Muhareb Abo Albaraa. Earlier another protester had to end his hunger strike on urgent medical advice. A third was admitted to hospital several times with medical complications but resumed his hunger strike after being discharged.
Medical issues
“The vast majority of Belgian-Palestinian fathers on the waiting list work, often doing double shifts, to provide financial support for their families in Gaza. As a result, however motivated they may be, they are unable to take part in the hunger strike,” the spokeswoman for the hunger strikers explained. “It is mainly those who are unable to work for medical reasons who were able to take part. It goes without saying that a hunger strike is particularly dangerous for these people.”
Of the four hunger strikers, only one person does not suffer from a serious medical condition. Many have also suffered from a sleep disorder for years and that negatively affects their daily functioning. “This insomnia stems from the fact that they literally lie awake worrying about the lives of their family members in Gaza, knowing they could receive terrible news at any moment.”
