A three-year-old who choked while eating lunch at a school in Antwerp has died, police have confirmed. The child was taken to hospital on Tuesday in a life-threatening condition.
The boy choked while eating a sandwich on Tuesday. The emergency services were called and resuscitated him before taking him to hospital, where he died on Thursday. An investigation into the circumstances is under way, but police do not suspect any malicious intent.
In a statement to Belga, the Antwerp Municipal Education Authority said the sense of shock at the school was “immeasurable”. “Our thoughts are first and foremost with his parents, family and friends, but also with the teachers involved who did everything they could to save him.”
Psychological support has been arranged by the school for children, parents and teachers who need it. The school will not be providing any further comment.
