Body found in search for KU Leuven professor on Scottish island

Police searching for a missing KU Leuven professor in Scotland have found a body, they said in a statement.

Hector Patmore, a professor of Biblical Studies, set off on Sunday morning on a hike to the summit of a mountain on the Isle of Skye but did not return to his accommodation. Police received a report of a body found in the Cuillin area of the Isle of Skye on Monday afternoon.

“Formal identification has yet to take place but the family of hillwalker Hector Patemore, 45, who had been reported missing from the area, are aware,” police said in a statement. “The death is not believed to be suspicious, and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.”

Patmore, an experienced hiker, left his hostel in Glen Brittle, near Torrin, at 10.45 on Sunday. According to police reports, he intended to climb Sgurr Na Banachdich and descend via Coire Na Banachdich.

He was reported missing at around 22.30 when he failed to return to his accommodation and his family were unable to contact him.

The Press and Journal newspaper reports that police and mountain rescue teams searched the area on foot for hours in poor weather conditions. The weather also meant that no search operation by helicopter could take place.

Patmore is a professor at the Biblical Studies Research Unit in KU Leuven’s Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies.
