Shootings in Brussels: Interion Minister Quintin wants electric scooters to have number plates

Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin (Francophone liberal MR) wants electric scooters to be fitted with number plates. He unveiled his proposal in the House Home Affairs Committee, which is meeting to discuss the recent shootings between drug gangs in Brussels. Scooters are often involved in drug-related violence, and compulsory number plates could make a significant difference in the fight against drug-related crime, says Quintin.

“I have discussed three incidents in this committee that have taken place over the past 36 hours. Electric scooters were used in two of those incidents. Because these scooters do not have number plates, it is virtually impossible to trace them after the incidents, even when they have been filmed by CCTV cameras. That is a clear loophole in our security policy.”

The minister is also looking into whether additional military personnel can be deployed in the fight against drug-related violence in Brussels. Forty-five soldiers are already patrolling the neighbourhoods of Brussels’ railway stations alongside the police, but that number may well increase.

Belgian Justice Minister Verlinden argues: “Invest more in the justice system and the police”

Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden (Flemish Christian democrat CD&V) has reiterated her call for greater investment in the justice system and the police. She made these remarks in the House Home Affairs Committee and was responding to the recent shootings in Brussels.

“We face a major budgetary exercise, with the associated choices and measures, but internal security remains a fundamental pillar of our society,” said Verlinden.
