Everybody in Belgium will feel the impact of the federal government’s imminent decisions to shore up the country’s national finances says Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever (Flemish nationalist N-VA). The federal PM was speaking on the French-medium independent radio station Bel RTL. “It’s keeping me awake at night; I think about it often,” the Prime Minister said.
PM De Wever eyes €10bn in cuts: “Everyone’s going to feel the pinch”
De Wever does not mince his words: the measures his 5-way government must take will affect everyone. “No matter how we go about it, it won’t be easy. However, I believe the public is mature and ready for this. Much more so than some politicians realise.”
According to De Wever, the public is aware that we are in trouble. “The world is changing. Europe is an old continent; the Chinese and the Americans are overtaking us. We are unable to organise our own defence and we are constantly being humiliated.”
“People do realise that we need to get moving and that we are in trouble,” said De Wever.
In the coming weeks, the federal government must find 10 billion euros to keep the budget on track to comply with European agreements by 2029. This effort comes on top of all the previous cuts the government has already implemented.
