Neighbourhood to take to the streets to protest against organised crime

In the Brussels borough of Sint-Gillis, local associations and groups are organising a rally to protest against organised crime. The rally to be held on Sunday is a response to the recent shootings in the municipality, which, according to the organisers, is suffering from “the growing influence of criminal organisations”.

“Sint-Gillis must not become a war zone,” say the organisers, who are inviting local residents to gather on the Bethlehem Square at 3.00 pm on Sunday. The organisers are calling for people to “say no to organised crime” and to demand that the authorities “take their political responsibility”.

On Monday evening, shots were fired in Sint-Gillis for the third day running. Interior minister Bernard Quintin (Francophone liberal MR) said on Tuesday that the shootings were “a sign that we must resolutely continue our fight against drug-related crime”.
