National Crisis Centre: 193 people under protective measures in Belgium

The National Crisis Centre (NCCN) opened 54 new cases involving people under threat in the first six months of 2026, the centre reported on Sunday. These are all people who are being threatened in the course of their profession, role or social function, such as politicians, police officers, civil servants or magistrates.

The NCCN is having to put protective measures in place for an increasing number of people: last year, 157 were under protection, with that figure now having risen to 193.

The 54 cases opened so far in 2026 involved 81 people. During the same period last year, there were 46 cases involving 59 people. According to the NCCN, this is partly because there is greater focus on the protection of threatened individuals, meaning that threatening situations are reported and followed up more quickly. However, the centre has also observed that the impact of organised crime has increased in these cases over the past five years.

To determine what measures are required, the NCCN works with the Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis in cases of terrorist or extremist threats, or with the federal police in cases involving criminal organisations.

Decisions may be made to adjust a person’s living environment and to avoid certain places, but measures may also include providing advice, maintaining constant contact with the local police or arranging regular patrols.

In exceptional cases, measures may be more far-reaching, such as close personal protection or accommodation in a secure residence. “However, such measures have a particularly significant impact on the person concerned and their environment and are therefore only taken in the event of serious and very specific threats,” the NCCN says.
