Three people have been injured following two gas explosions in a building close to Brussels Central station. Around 100 people had been evacuated from the building as a precaution after a after a contractor accidentally drilled into a low-pressure gas pipe.
Those injured are two employees of the gas network operator Sibelga and a firefighter. They have suffered burns, the severity of which is not yet known.
According to a Sibelga spokesperson, the explosions did not occur near the damaged gas pipe but inside the building itself. It is believed that gas had built up there.
Rescue operations are still under way. One of the injured is reported to have fallen into a shaft and is difficult to reach. The fire service has established a safety zone.
The building on Treurenberg where the explosions occurred is home to the Single Resolution Board, a decentralised agency of the European Union.
Trams 92 and 93 have been suspended between Louiza and Kruidtuin. Buses 29, 63, 65 and 66 have also been diverted since the leak began.
