Belgian soldiers to join NATO mission in Greenland

Belgium will send a military delegation to Greenland in September to take part in NATO’s Arctic Sentry mission, which aims to strengthen the alliance’s presence in the region.

Published:

The delegation will take part in the mission from 4 to 18 September. The Ministry of Defence is not disclosing the exact number of personnel being deployed, but it is known that soldiers from the 1st Brigade in Leopoldsburg and members of the Special Forces will be taking part.

Operation Arctic Sentry was launched as US president Donald Trump continued to make strong overtures towards Greenland. The presence on the island is intended to counter the US argument that security in the region is not guaranteed.

It is also intended to strengthen security in and around Greenland, Iceland and the Arctic Ocean, a strategically important region that is attracting increasing interest from countries including Russia and China. This is partly due to climate change, which is opening up new sea routes and access to raw materials.
