Son of Belgian missing in Spanish forest fire: “There was no warning. By the time they saw the fire, it was too late” (VIDEO)

“There was no warning; they were unaware of the fire, and by the time they saw it, it was too late.” Thomas-Wolf Verdonckt’s father was in the mountain village of Bédar near Los Gallardos when it was hit by a devastating fire. “The people who died did not disobey any orders, because no orders were given,” he told the Reuters news agency.

Thomas-Wolf Verdonckt last spoke to his father Stanislas (63) on the phone on Thursday evening just before 9 pm, he told the Reuters news agency. At that point, the fires were advancing rapidly towards the mountain village of Bédar, where his father lives.

“The people who died did not disobey any orders, because no orders were given. No information was provided. They only started trying to escape when the flames had almost reached them. It was their very last resort,” Verdonckt told Reuters. “It’s not fair that they’re being blamed, when it wasn’t their choice.”
