Life expectancy in Belgium rises to 82.5 years: Gap between men and women narrows

82.5 years is the average life expectancy in Belgium in 2025. This represents an increase of 54 days compared with the previous year, according to new figures from the Belgian statistics agency Statbel. It is striking that men in particular are catching up in significant terms: their life expectancy rose by 101 days, compared with just 3 days for women.

The gap between the two sexes is narrowing to less than 4 years. Last year, life expectancy for women stood at 84.4 years, and for men at 80.5 years.

In 1996, that difference was 6.67 years; by 2025, it had fallen to 3.87 years. In 2024, the difference was still 4.14 years.

Belgians live longer in Flanders

Differences between the regions also persisted in 2025. In the Flemish Region, life expectancy stands at 83.3 years, with a difference of 3.4 years between men and women (81.6 and 85 years respectively).

In Brussels, it is 82.3 years (79.9 years for men and 84.6 for women) and in the Walloon Region 81 years (78.7 for men and 83.2 years for women).

Life expectancy is highest in Flemish Brabant, at 83.9 years, and lowest in Hainault Province, at 80.1 years.
