Yellow heat warning as fresh heatwave approaches: highs of 30 degrees or more all week

From today until Wednesday, a Code Yellow heat warning is in force across the whole country, except on the Flemish coast, the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) notes.

Warmer weather is forecast again for the coming days. From today, temperatures inland will rise to at least 25 degrees, and from Thursday, temperatures of 30 degrees or more are expected.

The Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) defines a heatwave as a period during which the maximum temperature in Ukkel (Brussels) reaches 25 degrees or more for at least five consecutive days, including at least three days with temperatures of 30 degrees or higher.

According to IRCEL, the Interregional Cell for the Environment, the warning phase of the heat action plan has been reached for the second time this year. Consequently, the warning phase of the heat action plans has been declared in all regions.

This phase activates public health warnings, ramps up monitoring by general practitioners and retirement homes, and increases social outreach for the elderly and homeless.

In a subsequent phase, the Risk Management Group may decide to activate the alarm phase, as was already the case at the end of June.

This phase mandates public warnings, activates community support for vulnerable people (like the elderly), and coordinates emergency services to prevent heatstroke and dehydration

Weather outlook

It’s set to be another difficult week for many with temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius and more.

Monday expect sunshine and high-altitude cloud. It remains dry and it’s already warm, with maximum temperatures ranging from 24 degrees in the High Fens to 28 to 30 degrees in most other regions. There will be a moderate westerly wind, with gusts of up to 50 km/h in the High Fens.

Tuesday will see maximum temperatures of 24 degrees on the Flemish coast and in the Upper Ardennes, rising to 28 to 29 or possibly 30 degrees in central parts.

On Wednesday, maximum temperatures will rise to 31 degrees, on Thursday to 33 degrees and on Friday to 32 degrees. Maximum temperatures will also remain above 30 degrees next weekend, with the possibility of localised thunderstorms on Saturday.
