The international dance competition ‘Unbreakable’ is coming to the West Flemish seaside resort of Ostend in September of this year. Leuven University founded the event in 2005 to support local hip-hop culture. More than 400 participants from across Europe and beyond have already registered. In addition to the main competition, the programme also features various side events and workshops.
International breakdance competition ‘Unbreakable’ heads for Ostend next September
Unbreakable is one of the four largest breakdance competitions in the world. It began 20 years ago as an initiative of Leuven University to support local hip-hop culture. The event is now coming to Ostend for the first time. Ostend City Council recently approved a partnership agreement with Golazo, which is organising the event in collaboration with the Flemish dance sport federation Danssport Vlaanderen for the 2026, 2027 and 2028 editions. Danssport Vlaanderen groups 400 dance sport associations and 60,000 dancers.
“Ostend aims to present an attractive annual calendar of diverse sporting events that also appeal to a wide audience,” says alderwoman Charlotte Verkeyn (Flemish nationalist N-VA), who is responsible for sports policy in the resort. “The great thing about this event is that it’s about more than just the competition. A range of leisure activities will also be staged.”
Events large and small
Unbreakable will work with various organisations across the city. “More than 400 international participants have already registered,” says a proud Verkeyn. “The main event will take place on the Zeeheldenplein near the pier, but there will be plenty to see and do elsewhere too.”
“Together with local dance clubs and the community, workshops and activities are being organised at various locations across the city. And all in a very accessible way.”
“We want to help young people discover their own talents. Because sport brings about so many positive things” the alderwoman told VRT NEWS.
