Second heatwave in the offing? It’s too early to call.

There is growing speculation among the public at large that a new second heatwave is just around the corner:  “No extreme temperatures are on the way, but temperatures will again rise above 25 degrees from Saturday” says meteorologist and VRT weather presenter Bram Verbruggen.

Anyone checking the weather apps will see that sunny and warm weather is once again on the way. But will it result in a second heatwave? “It’s possible,” says VRT weather host Bram Verbruggen. He, too, can see from the weather models how temperatures will rise above 25 degrees Celsius for an extended period from Saturday onwards.

“There could also be three days of 30 degrees in the course of next week. But with every recalculation of the weather models, the predicted temperatures vary by a degree or two each time.

It is at present still too early to say with any certainty whether a new heatwave is on the way. “Another spell of warm weather is ahead, which may meet the criteria for a heatwave, but extreme temperatures are not expected for the time being,” concludes the meteorologist.

These are the conditions the weather must meet in Belgium for a heatwave to be declared. In Belgium, a heatwave is officially defined as a period of at least five consecutive days during which the maximum temperature at the Met Office in Ukkel (Brussels) reaches at least 25 °C. Furthermore, within this period, there must be at least three days on which the temperature rises to 30 °C or more.
