Footballer Radja Nainggolan ran a red light in Antwerp province at the weekend and narrowly avoided hitting an unmarked police car.
Footballer Nainggolan’s car impounded after running red light
Nainggolan is banned from driving but got behind the wheel anyway on Saturday evening. At 20.00, he ran through a red light at the Oelgem motorway junction. In doing so, he only just managed to avoid an unmarked police vehicle, which was on its way to another call-out.
He failed a breathalyser test. The police have drawn up a report and the matter is now in the hands of the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. “His vehicle has been impounded and he will be summoned to appear before the police court again,” a spokesperson said.
In 2018, the Sint-Niklaas magistrates court banned Nainggolan from driving for one month for driving under the influence. A few years later, in 2021, he was sentenced to a seven-month driving ban – four months of which were to be served – and a fine of €3,200. The police had stopped him while he was driving at over 100 km/h and under the influence along the Scheldt quays.
In October 2022, he was briefly arrested and questioned by police for driving without a valid licence. Although his ban had expired, he had not yet retaken his driving tests.
