Car drops into Kruidtuin Tunnel (Botanique) in Brussels: morning rush hour in chaos

An unusual traffic accident in the Kruidtuin Tunnel (aka the Tunnel Botanique) in Brussels last night, caused severe traffic jams this morning. A car dropped into the tunnel as a result of a road accident. The driver was injured but managed to climb out of the vehicle unaided.

The accident happened around 3.00 am but still caused severe traffic jams and completely disrupted the morning rush hour for drivers negotiating the inner-city orbital ring road.

The vehicle fell into the tunnel during an accident; it is not yet clear how this happened. “The driver then managed to get out of the car unaided,” says Walter Derieuw of the Brussels fire service. The victim has been taken to hospital for treatment.

The police were still at the scene during the morning rush hour on Tuesday morning that proceeded in chaos. The tunnel has since been reopened, local Brussels police told Brussels media outlet BRUZZ at around 7.30 am.

At around 7.30 am, traffic was still backed up for an hour and a half from the Keizer Karellaan to Rogier.
