Met Office issues code yellow warning for thunderstorms across much of the country; emergency helpline 1722 active

The Royal Meteorological Institute (KMI) has issued a code yellow warning for thunderstorms valid for much of the country. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong gusts of wind may be particularly severe in some areas this afternoon. The emergency helpline number 1722 for issues when there is no threat to life has been activated.

From early morning, a yellow alert is in force across Wallonia, Limburg, Flemish Brabant and Brussels, and will remain so until 11 pm. The Met Office is warning against strong gusts of wind and rainfall that within a 24-hour period could reach up to 40 millimetres locally. Showers are likely to be particularly intense in the afternoon.

The Home Ministry has activated the emergency number 1722. This allows people needing assistance in connection with storm damage or flooding to contact the fire service and takes pressure off 112.

For life-threatening situations, the emergency number 112 is the one to call.

Unstable conditions all the rest of the week

The weather remains unsettled for the rest of the week. On Wednesday and Thursday expect regular showers.

Temperatures will fall steadily: on Friday, maximum temperatures in central parts will be around 16 degrees. Expect some light rain in places on Saturday. Sunday will be mainly dry and sunny.
