Eurovision Song Contest: “Hit Israel where it hurts” says Flemish liberals’ Gwendolyn Rutten

The Flemish Parliament’s Media Select Committee is discussing the matter of whether or not Flemish public broadcaster should broadcast this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

Flemish liberal Gwendolyn Rutten (Anders) already has a clear opinion on the matter and yesterday told VRT News the broadcaster should not air the Eurovision Song Contest due to Israel’s participation. In doing so, she is backing an initiative by more than 1,000 international artists, including dozens of Belgian artists, who support a boycott.

‘I really believe the VRT needs to take a stand,’ says Rutten. ‘You have to hit Israel, which is guilty of genocide, where it hurts: in the pocket: fewer viewers, fewer televotes and a smaller market for Moroccanoil, the festival’s main Israeli sponsor.’

‘I’ve also read that the VRT unions don’t want to broadcast this Eurovision Song Contest. Perhaps they should engage in civil disobedience. It would be a good day on which to pull the plug right then and there. They certainly have my support,’ Rutten told VRT News.
