This year the 30th edition of the Brussels Pride event is being staged in the Belgian and Flemish capital. The Brussels authorities say they remain fully committed to promoting the visibility, culture and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride Week runs from 6 to 15 May. This year, the city is also organising cultural activities including performances and guided tours.
From 2 May, 180 rainbow flags will colour the Pride route in Brussels. Iconic locations including the Brussels Stock Exchange and the De Munt opera house will be illuminated with special and unique light installations. The Kolenmarkt will be adorned with festive rainbow decorations.
This year’s theme is “When Times Get Darker, We Shine Brighter”. Brussels Pride is keen to emphasise the importance of solidarity and diversity in challenging times. Brussels alderman Didier Wauters says Pride is about visibility and humanity in the city.
Cultural activities for Pride Week
Culture also plays an important role in the significance of Pride Week. On 8 May, the Museum of the City of Brussels is organising a guided tour centring on LGBTQIA+ history. On 13 and 14 May, Cabaret Mademoiselle will stage four performances at Brussels City Hall.
Nawal Ben Hamou, Brussels alderwoman for Culture, emphasises that Brussels wishes to continue strengthening its commitment to LGBTQIA+ rights, particularly in a context where these rights are under pressure.
