Belgium’s oldest Denise Waelbers dies at 110

Denise Waelbers, the oldest person in Begium, has died at the age of 110. In September, she celebrated her birthday at home, having lived briefly in a care home in Mortsel (Antwerp Province). “On that occasion we visited her with a bouquet of flowers,” explains Mortsel mayor Michiel Hubeau.

In 2024, Denise Waelbers officially became the oldest resident in Belgium. She was then 108. “I do what I enjoy doing, and still have the occasional pint of beer,” she revealed at the time, her secret to reaching an advanced age.

Denise continued to live in her flat in Mortsel for a long time. However, she temporarily moved to a care home because her neighbour Monique, who looked after her, had to undergo surgery. Once Monique had recovered, Denise moved back to her flat.
