The heavily travelled E313 motorway that runs from Antwerp to Liège will be closed along a nine-kilometre stretch starting tonight
E313 at Antwerp to close for five days, with major traffic implications
Tonight at 20.00 the E313 between the Antwerp Ring and Wommelgem will close for five days to allow works to be carried out. Despite the Easter holiday period, the closure is expected to cause major traffic problems in the area along the stretch of motorway between Deurne and Wommelgem.
Both directions of the motorway, which runs from Antwerp to Liege, will close this evening, 10 April, and re-open at 5.00 next Thursday, 16 April. “This will be extremely disruptive,” says Hajo Beeckman of VRT’s traffic centre. “This will cause major problems, especially Monday through Wednesday.”
The E313 serves travellers heading to the Netherlands and to Germany, as well as commuters driving between Antwerp and Hasselt. Anyone heading to Hasselt or Liège is advised to route through Brussels, and those going to Eindhoven should travel through Breda.
The closure will also affect traffic inside Antwerp and Wommelgem, as several motorway entrances and exits will be closed off, with drivers being routed through the cities. Local and motorway travellers are advised to find alternative forms of transportation during the five-day closure.
Several police officers have been assigned to the project and will keep a constant watch on traffic conditions, taking measures where needed to try to alleviate the situation as much as possible.
Travellers this morning will be forgiven for thinking that the road was already closed, as a truck transporting chickens crashed on the E313 at Grobbendonk. Traffic was backed up for kilometres as the truck was righted and dead chickens cleared from the road. All lanes are now open and traffic is moving smoothly in the area.
