Ostend bar launches dedicated menu for dogs: ‘From snacks to full meals’

Dogs visiting our premier seaside resort now have the option of eating a dish on offer on the dog’s menu at the pavement café outside Ostend’s Kursaal. That is if their owners are willing to foot the bill. The owner of Brassi Terrace Beach first saw a special dog’s menu at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Monaco last summer, and she decided to bring the idea back to the Flemish coast.

‘Before we visited the restaurant in Monaco, we’d asked if dogs were allowed,’ says Kelly Van Loo of Brassi Terrace Beach. ‘It turned out they were, so we went there with our dog Maurice. Before we’d even had a chance to order, he was already given a bowl of water. But they also had a menu for him. We thought it was so brilliant that we decided to bring the concept back to Ostend.’

Anyone for fillet of breast of duck?

The dog menu in Ostend includes 125-gram portions of beef, fish or poultry, each served with vegetables. ‘In addition, owners can choose from chew bones in various sizes, suitable for everything from Chihuahuas to German Shepherds. But there are also treats made, for example from fresh fillet of breast of duck. There’s something for everyone.’

The dog treats have been on the menu since Saturday. The concept seems to be catching on: according to Kelly, 9 out of 10 visitors with a dog order something from the menu. ‘We felt very welcome with Maurice at that restaurant in Monaco. The aim is for our customers to feel the same way.’

Dog menu, but no kids

Still, you won’t encounter any families with dogs and children at Brassi Terrace Beach. It is 'Adults Only', just as there are hotels for adults only. ‘Since children aren’t allowed in the casino itself, we’ve extended that policy to the terrace. It’s not because we’ve got anything against children. Many guests simply appreciate being able to sit here in peace. There was some criticism at first, but now 70 per cent of people respond positively,’ says Kelly.
