A four-year-old boy was bitten in the face by a dog at the fair in Herzele (East Flanders) yesterday. The boy was walking around at the fair when he passed a dog that was on a lead. The dog, an American Staffordshire terrier, suddenly attacked the child that was then swiftly taken to hospital. An investigation is underway.
The biting incident took place at the fair in Herzele, daily Het Laatste Nieuws reports. The child was walking around at the fair, when it was suddenly attacked by a dog.
“The dog was on a lead. We do not yet have any further details. An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is currently underway,” Herzele Mayor Benjamin Rogiers says.
Mayor to take action in time
Only once that investigation has been completed can the mayor take action.
“Only once there is more clarity can I take action against the dog and its owner. This could range from a psychological assessment and behavioural therapy to, if necessary, having the dog put down. But to be clear: I will first await the results of the investigation and then we will consider what needs to be done. I will follow the recommendations of the prosecutor’s office and the police,” the mayor added.
The little boy was immediately taken to hospital following the incident and underwent an operation to his lip.
