Bancontact electronic payments' woes across Belgium appear sorted

Electronic payments via the Bancontact system seem to be working again. For over an hour, it was impossible to make any electronic payments across Belgium. The cause of the problem is not yet known. There were also problems earlier this morning.

The first reports of payment problems came just before midday. Several users told VRT News that they were unable to pay using their bank card in shops. In the meantime, the website allestoringen.be, which records this type of disruption, received thousands of reports.

Around 1 pm, the announcement came that the problems with electronic payments had been resolved. Reports from supermarkets across Belgium say that it is once again possible to pay by card.

Payment processor Worldline carried out maintenance work on the electronic payment network last night. This also caused temporary payment problems early this morning. It is not clear whether the latest disruption is related to that maintenance work.

Worldline is still investigating the cause.
