The suspicious package found at Antwerp Central Station on Tuesday evening has been found to be harmless, says Kim Bastiaens, spokesperson for Antwerp police. Three people have been arrested.

After the suspicious package was reported, police arrived at the scene around 7 pm and established a wide security cordon. As a result, some entrances to the station were closed, though other entrances remained open. The army bomb disposal unit DOVO then arrived on the scene and was able to confirm that the parcel was safe. The security cordon around the station was then lifted.
Police arrested three people, who were questioned yesterday evening.
It is unclear whether this incident is linked to the two incidents that occurred on Monday. On Monday evening, a car was torched in Antwerp’s Jewish quarter, a short distance away. That arson attack has provisionally been classified as a deliberate arson attack committed at night and the work of a terrorist group. Two minors were arrested shortly after the incident.
Also Monday evening, the Brussels-South railway station was closed for several hours following the discovery of three suspicious packages. At least one of them bore the words ‘explosive’ and ‘corrosive’. However, all the packages turned out to be harmless.
