The Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever (Flemish nationalist) has told the Federal Parliament’s Home Affairs Select Committee that he is reluctant to introduce support measures to bring down energy prices. He made this clear during a meeting of the House of Representatives’ Home Affairs Select Committee on Tuesday.
With the exception of Mr De Wever’s Flemish nationalist party (N-VA) the federal coalition parties have all called for measures to curb soaring energy prices in recent weeks. However, the Belgian PM does not think this is a good idea.
“You should learn lessons from what the previous government did. It threw money around like confetti, and that is now a heavy burden that dragging the Titanic down still further down”.
“The budget situation is not good and the geopolitical circumstances could drag us down even further. (...) Running to the television cameras with all manner of proposals to supposedly spare the public is irresponsible”, Mr De Wever said.
