According to figures released by the traffic safety institute Vias, the number of people killed in road accidents in Belgium fell slightly in 2025. The 2025-figures are the lowest on record. Data from the Police shows that 445 people died on Belgium’s roads in 2025. This is a fall of 2.2% compared with 2024.
In 2025, the number of road deaths in Flanders fell to 234, a decrease of 14 compared with the previous year. There was also a modest (6%) decrease in the number of fatalities on the roads in Wallonia, from 197 in 2024 to 191 in 2025.
The Brussels-Capital Region was the only region in Belgium where the number of fatalities on the roads increased. There were 20 road deaths in Brussels last year compared with 10 in 2020. The 2025 figures were the highest since 2022.
Fewer cyclists and pedestrians killed
In Belgium as a whole deaths among pedestrians fell from 70 to 52, the lowest figure ever recorded. There were also fewer fatalities also declined among cyclists (79 in 2025, 86 in 2024) and people in cars (191 in 2025, 198 in 2024). However, deaths involving electric scooters increased sharply from 4 in 2024 to 13 in 2025.
Despite the fall in the number of fatalities, the number of road traffic accidents rose in 2025. The 2.9% increase brought the total to 36,621. Vias says that the figures suggest that road accidents are becoming less severe. In 2016 around 16 out of every 1,000 traffic accidents in which injury was caused resulted in death. By 2025 this figure had fallen to 12.
Vias suggests that this may be because accidents now happen more often at lower speeds and this reduces the impact. Lower speed limits, stronger enforcement and driver-assistance systems in cars may all be contributing factors.
The road safety institute believes that further action is still needed to ensure a long-term reduction in road deaths. It is in favour of stricter penalties for drink driving and for using a mobile phone while driving. Vias also calls for a targeted approach to deal with repeat traffic offenders. This measure is outlined in the federal government’s coalition agreement.
