The Belgian prime minister Bart De Wever (Flemish nationalist N-VA) has responded to the American and Israeli attacks on Iran for a first time.

‘International law applies if the major powers in the world want to respect it, and that is no longer the case,’ Belgian leader Bart De Wever said in an initial response to the war in the Middle East. ‘We are waking up to a different kind of world. Invoking international law against a regime that has massacred its own citizens on a massive scale: I have reservations about that too.’

This is the first time the prime minister has spoken publicly about the war in the Middle East. ‘Hasty statements made under stress during a geopolitical crisis rarely seem appropriate to me,’ he says.

Belgium’s National Security Council will meet tomorrow to discuss the conflict and consider whether any additional measures are necessary.
