Flemish Youth Council demands action for children and young people without a fixed abode

The Flemish Youth Council and 11 civil society organisations put up for sale signs on various buildings across Flanders and in our capital city Brussels. Using slogans such as “right to housing violated” they demanded that attention be given to children and young people without a fixed abode.

The action coincided with the launch of a new Flemish action plan against homelessness. The Flemish Youth Council says that the action plan contains too few concrete measures, is unclear regarding funding and does not mention any clear timing.

There are an estimated 20,000 people in Flanders that have no fixed abode. Of these more than 5,000 are minors. 1 in 5 homeless people and people with no fixed abode are aged between 16 and 25. In addition to this there are 210,000 people on waiting lists for social housing in Flanders.

On Monday, the Chair of the Flemish Youth Council Anna Roos handed over its advice on housing to the Flemish Youth and Hosing Minister Hans Bonte. “

"If a minor is homeless, it is not the child that has fail, but the policies applied. Children shouldn’t be having to worry about the price of rent, waiting lists or finding a place to sleep”.
