A man in his forties escaped from Hoogstraten Prison on Monday evening. News of the escape was reported by the daily ‘Het Laatste Nieuws’ and has since been confirmed by VRT News’ sources at the Prison Service.
Prior to his escape the prisoner had hidden during the evening exercise period and was able to escape through a window. He is currently being sought by police.
Kathleen Van De Vijver of the Prison Service told VRT News that “During the headcount that followed the evening walk it soon became apparent that someone was missing. The man had hidden himself during the walk and was later able to escape through a window”.
The police searched for the man on Monday night. However, this was to no avail. The man, who is in his forties, was serving a sentence of less than three years. The police are continuing their search to find the fugitive and return him to prison
