The most recent figures on the number of drink-driving checks per local police zone – from the winter of 2024-2025 – show that some local zones carry out far fewer checks than others between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
However, data from the road safety institute VIAS shows that drivers involved in accidents with injuries at night are much more likely to be under the influence than drivers involved in accidents with injuries during the day.
During weeknights, 33.3 per cent of the 1,226 drivers tested after an accident were found to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. During weekend nights, 41.9 per cent of the 1,793 drivers tested who were involved in an accident involving injury were found to be under the influence.
