US Ambassador Bill White should not expect the Belgian government to call Flemish socialist leader Conner Rousseau (Vooruit) to account after he drew parallels between Donald Trump’s America and Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany, says VRT political editor Bart Verhulst. The US is asking the Belgian government to condemn Rousseau's statements about Donald Trump ‘immediately’.
US Ambassador White “shouldn’t hold his breath for condemnation” of party leader drawing parallels between Trump and the Nazis
‘However, Brussels is not Washington – or at least not Donald Trump's Washington,’ says Verhulst (pictured below). ‘The Belgian foreign minister yesterday made it clear to White that Rousseau – as party leader and member of the Flemish Parliament – is entitled to express his opinion, and that the government has no say in the matter. That is all White will get.’
Bart Verhulst does not expect Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever (Flemish nationalist N-VA) to condemn Rousseau's statements either. ‘I don't think the Prime Minister feels like responding to every single one of White’s whims. Moreover, doing so would bring the tension that exists around this matter into the heart of government.’
Earlier in the week Ambassador White was summoned to the foreign ministry after criticising a judicial investigation into 3 Jewish circumcisers and being accused of meddling in the country’s internal affairs.
