During a nationwide operation staged on 3 and 4 February the police caught 2,510 motorists that were deemed to be “distracted” while driving. 2,242 of these were using their mobile phone while at the wheel of their vehicle. More than 1,100 driving licence were revoked with immediate effect. The figures are considerably lower than during a previous operation to catch distracted drivers that was held last October.
In early February, the police carried out 48 hours of extra checks on motorists throughout the country to see whether they were distracted behind the wheel.
They not only checked for mobile phone use, but also for whether motorists reading a book, applying make-up or doing anything else that might prevent you them from having sufficient control over their vehicle.
Of all the motorists check, 2,242 were found to be using their mobile phone while driving. This is more than 500 fewer than were caught doing so in October when 2,877 drivers were caught. Of the 2,242 drivers caught using their phones while driving, 1,066 had their driving licences revoked with immediate effect.
