Two people have died as a result of a fire that broke out on Thursday night in a supported housing centre in Ostend. The other nine residents were injured and remain in hospital.

La Colomba is a small-scale home for people with mental health problems who are unable to live by themselves. According to the local fire brigade, it currently houses 11 people.

The fire broke out just before 23.00 yesterday evening in the facility on Dokter Eduard Moreauxlaan, a thoroughfare near the coastal city’s harbour. While there is a housing support worker on site during the day, this is not the case at night.

Firefighters continued to douse flames throughout the night. The cause of the first has not yet been determined.
