Belgium PM says it’s “advisable to wait and see” before recognising a Palestinian state

The Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever (Flemish nationalist) has told the Federal Parliament that he believes that it is “advisable” to wait before recognising Palestine as an independent state. Mr De Wever was speaking on Wednesday morning.

In September 2025, Belgium joined the countries that say that they wish to recognise Palestine as a state, but only once certain conditions were met. Belgium would only commit to officially recognising a Palestinian state once Hamas has released all hostages and is no longer part of the administration in Gaza.

On Monday, the Israeli army found the body of the last hostage. A week ago, the US President Donald Trump established the “Peace Council” that is meant to take over the administration of the Gaza Strip from Hamas.. According to some, this means that the conditions set by Belgium for recognising Palestine as a state have been met.

However, like the European Union, Mr De Wever has “serious doubts” about President Trump’s “Peace Council”.  The Belgian Prime Minister told the Federal Parliament that “Putin and Lukashenko are not men of peace. I think it is advisable to wait and see. If we see that things are moving in the right direction, we can reward that step by step.”
