Police in the Australian island state of Tasmania have found human remains during a search for a Belgian woman that has been missing since June 2023. The Australian broadcaster ABC reports that the remains were found during a search in the Waratah area on the west coast of Tasmania. It was there that the Belgian tourist Céline Cremer went missing. The Australian authorities say forensic tests are still required to identify the remains.
Céline Cremer from Liège was 31 when she vanished on 17 June 2023. She was last seen in the small village of Waratah, close to the trailhead of the popular Philosopher Falls walk. This is around 10km from where the remains were found.
Céline Cremer ‘s car was found on the Philosopher Falls car park on 26 June 2023, not long after she had been reported missing by friends and family. An extensive search lasting several days failed to find any trace of the Belgian. The formal search for Ms Cremer was suspended later the summer of 2023 (which is winter in Tasmania) amid concerns she could not have survived the harsh bush conditions.
Friends and volunteers
In December 2025, a renewed, privately organised search led Céline Cremer’s friends and volunteers discovered her smartphone about 60m from her last known location.
It was a search volunteer that found the human remains. The Police say that a pathologist has confirmed that the remains are human. They will now undergo forensic testing to determine whether they linked to Ms Cremer.
Further details will be given at a press conference on Thursday.
