Taxi driver slaying: two suspects arrested

Two members of the public have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 45-year-old taxi driver in Geel (Antwerp Province) on Friday evening, the Antwerp public prosecutor's office says. The suspects are two men aged 20 and 24 from Merksem (City of Antwerp) and Geel. Their motive is still unclear.

The killing took place on Friday evening around 9 p.m. in Larum, a hamlet of Geel in the Kempen District. After receiving an emergency call, the police and emergency services found a man in the street suffering from a gunshot wound. Attempts were made to resuscitate him but in vain.

The victim was a 45-year-old taxi driver, who owned his own taxi company. The man, who was of Albanian descent, leaves a wife and three children.

In recent days, several house searches have been carried out, and two suspects were arrested, the public prosecutor's office says. They are two men aged 20 and 24 from Merksem and Geel.

After being questioned, they were brought before the investigating judge last night and arrested on suspicion of murder. On Friday, they will appear before a judge to decide on their further detention.

The judicial investigation is continuing. ‘At this stage, it is still unclear who fired the fatal shot and what the motive for the shooting was,’ the public prosecutor's office said.
