Figures published on Tuesday by the Flemish Traffic Centre show that several traffic jam records were broken on our region’s roads in 2025. Never before have drivers in Flanders spent so much time stuck in Traffic. Monthly records were set in January, February, June and August of last year.
In 2025 the total amount of time that drivers spent in traffic jams reached a record high in 2025. During last year’s motorists in Flanders lost an average total of almost 105,000 hours per day in congestion. This is first time ever that the combined daily average for time lost by all motorists using our region’s roads has exceeded 100,000 hours. In 2024 the figure stood at 98,419 hours. The average for working days (weekdays excluding public holidays) is even higher.
June 2025 was the worst June ever on record when it comes to traffic congestion. A daily average of 167km of jams was recorded and there were average of 21 accidents/day in June 2025. The Flemish Traffic Centre’s Peter Bruyninckx says that hot weather was a contributory factor. New monthly records were also set in January, February and August of last year.
Kilometres travelled still below pre-pandemic levels
While the total number of kilometres travelled by all the vehicles using Flemish roads increased during 2025 it still remains below pre-pandemic levels. The worst morning rush hour last year was on 11 February when there was a total of 330km of tailbacks on Flemish motorways and highways. The worst evening rush hour was on 30 April just ahead of the long Labour Day weekend when jams totaled 230km.
Despite the record-breaking figures, 2025 as a whole is not the worst year on record for traffic congestion in Flanders. With an average of 159km kilometres of traffic jams each day 2024 retains that distinction. The worst month on record for traffic jams in Flanders was also in 2024. On working days in November 2024, traffic jams averaged 206 kilometres.
